Back in the day goalie protection was just bulky chest pads and silly looking throat guards. Nowadays the quality of goalie specific gear is incredible. The chest pads are lighter than ever, without sacrificing any protection (more than likely increasing protection). The throat guards are sleek looking and don’t restrict head movement. The gloves are the main improvement, as there are now more goalie specific gloves than ever. Having solid thumb protection and padding for the hands not only helps to protect a goalie, but also adds some confidence knowing that you won’t be getting injured every time you make a save with your hand.
